Samsung’s 5G prototype unveiled with a corner notch

During Qualcomm Tech Summit in Hawaii, Samsung showcased a prototype of its upcoming 5G smartphone. While it was expected that Samsung will showcase a prototype, the design of the device is something we have never seen before.

American carriers Verizon and AT&T announced at the event that they will offer a 5G smartphone from Samsung in the first half of 2019. As per earlier reports, this is expected to be a special 5G variant of the Galaxy S10.

During the event, Verizon and AT&T had set up small-scale 5G networks to demonstrate their capabilities. Motorola also tested its 5G Moto Mod during the event. A picture shared by Chris Velazco on Twitter showcases the 5G prototype from Samsung.

Samsung showcased a prototype device that was hidden in a dark case to hide the design. While the outer design of the device was not visible, the display of the device was visible and the corner notch is something that we have never seen from the Korean smartphone maker.

As per an Engadget report, Samsung was very protective about the device and did not allow anyone to even touch the device even when it was streaming 4K videos on the big screen using Verizon’s 5G network. When a Samsung representative turned on the display, the corner notch was clearly visible to everyone present.

The device is just a prototype and may not represent what Samsung is planning for its devices in the future. Additionally, Samsung has already unveiled how its notches will look when it unveiled the Infinity-U, Infinity-V and Infinity-O designs.

In a statement to TechRadar, Justin Denison, SVP, General Manager, said, "You should think of that device as a sample device. Not necessarily indicative of what the final device will look like, its size, shape, or even the UI treatment."

One of the reasons we can think about why Samsung did this is to maintain the hype around the Galaxy S10 and keep the design of the device under wraps. We should know more about the Galaxy S10 and Samsung’s 5G device in the coming days.
