In an event that took place today in Beijing, China, Xiaomi finally unveiled their latest flagship smartphone. Along with the Mi9, the company also announced the Mi 9 SE, a budget-friendly version of the flagship phone. They also launched a transparent version of the phone, which will initially be available only in China. The Mi 9 has specifications to rival the OnePlus 6T, Google Pixel 3 and the upcoming Samsung S10.
The Mi 9 is the company’s first foray into the world of triple rear camera lenses. Apart from that, the main draw of the phone should be the Snapdragon 855 it uses, another first by the company.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a 6.39-inch FHD AMOLED display which should provide vivid and vibrant colours. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6, the latest of its kind. The screen sports a waterdrop style notch that is a growing trend in the smartphone community. Also, if one looks closely enough, the bottom bezel has been reduced to give the phone a 90.7% screen to body ratio. Additionally, the phone has a fifth generation in-display fingerprint sensor which is said to be faster and more accurate than previous generation models.
As for internals, the phone comes with the latest Snapdragon 855 and comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The transparent back model (only available in China as of now) will come with a massive 12GB RAM on board to help with gaming and day to day performance. The Mi 9 runs on Xiaomi’s own MiUI 9 based on Android 9.0 Pie.
The phone sports a triple camera set up and this is the first time that the company has made such a move. The primary lens is a 48-megapixel sensor at an f/1.75 aperture. The secondary sensor is a 16-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with 117-degree point of view. The final lens is a telephoto lens at 12-megapixels is for depth sensing and 2x optical zoom support.
The battery of the phone is a mediocre 3,300mAH battery. However, it supports wireless fast charging that is faster than your average wireless charging. Additionally, it also supports USB-C charging at 27W, which makes the phone ready for the day in no time.
The phone is expected to be priced at ₹32,000.
The Mi 9 SE is a more budget-friendly phone and is a toned down version of the Mi 9. It is rather similar to the original Mi 9 the only differences being the smaller 5.97-inch AMOLED display, the Snapdragon 712 chipset and the triple rear camera configuration. The rear cameras of the phone are a 48-megapixel sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor. The front camera remains the same at 20-megapixels.
The Mi 9 SE will sport a 3,070mAH battery to keep it powered up. The phone will come in two models- the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage option and the 6GB RAM and 128GB variant. The phone should be priced at around ₹21,000 in India.
Along with the two phones, the company also revealed the Mi 9 transparent edition. The phone will have decals at the back, rather than showing the real deal. A similar edition of the Mi 8 was released last year, but this year, the back has been revamped to give it a different look. The highlight of the phone will be the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. As of now, the phone will only be available in China.
Xiaomi also launched a 10,000mAH battery pack that is capable of wireless charging. All you have to do is place the phone on the power bank and you’re good to go.
