Xiaomi’s Redmi to become an independent brand starting January 10 with a 48-megapixel camera phone

Xiaomi has had a pretty good year in terms of solidifying its foot around the world and giving more people access to their product portfolio. Now in 2019, Xiaomi will be spinning off the Redmi lineup as a separate and independent brand. The information comes after Xiaomi’s Weibo account confirmed that a press launch event is scheduled for January 10 which will see Redmi becoming an independent entity.

This isn’t the first time a smartphone brand is establishing a smartphone series as a separate brand altogether. Case in point, Huawei with their Honor phones and recently, Realme smartphones which spun off from OPPO.

Alongside the announcement, Xiaomi also shared a teaser poster which has “Redmi” in the center followed by Chinese text which more or less translates to “new independent brand, Xiaomi Redmi conference”

Interestingly, the drop shadow beneath the Redmi lettering has the number 48 which leads us to believe that the Redmi phone that’s slated to launch on January 10 will, in fact, have a 48-megapixel camera.

Now, looking at the recent leaks and rumors, the phone in question could very much be the Redmi Pro 2 which has been rumored to sport a 48-megapixel sensor. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 and is very likely to be launched in India as well. We will know more as we near the January 10 launch of the next Redmi phone.
