The by-lanes of old Dilli are a foodie’s favourite path to tread on- every street food joint or eatery here has stories dating back to the times we weren’t even born! Either the delicacies found here, come lapped in tales or the quaint joints account for narratives which are a perfect accompaniment to our meals.

Along similar lines, we chanced upon the iconic ‘Japani Samosas’ here in Chandni Chowk which are perfect for people who’re tired of snacking on the traditional aloo samosas! The place has such a history and charm that we just had to try the samosas out.

A ‘hole in the wall’ joint on Diwan Hall Road, Manohar Dhaba, in old Delhi has been serving Japani Samosas since 1949 but it had originally started in Lahore, in 1924. You’ll see a line on the board right under their name, which says ‘Japani samosey waley’ but there’s no influence of Japan on this dish and nobody knows how the name came into being. But it surely does add an offbeat ring to it, which is enough for people to travel all the way to puraani Dilli for a chance to savour this delicacy.

What’s The Dish?

This in-house specialty is actually kind of a layered samosa and it’s filled with potatoes, mild spices and peas, served with pindi chhole! The filo pastry gives it a crunch while the spicy chhole complement the mild taste and ultimately making up for a perfect blend of savoury and crunch. The samosa is served with a tangy pickle if you’re looking for a little extra zing.

These samosas are a welcome change among the regular tea-time tucks and when you pair this with a cup of hot beverage, you’ll know that life is good.

The Vibe!

There are some scattered tables and chairs for folks to sit and eat but since it is somewhat moulded on the lines of a dhaba, you can’t expect much out of the ambiance. But what you can totally bank upon, is the actual taste of this snack, regardless of the scruffy conditions of the joint!

So when here- do try out their Aloo Naan and Rajma Chawal because you’ll be completely bowled over by the taste. To end the flavour extravaganza on a sweet note, try out the kulfis around the area.
