The civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) executed a historic reform by reducing the fares of bus services across Mumbai, in order to boost ridership. The BEST committee held an official meeting on Tuesday where the resolution to lower the bus fares was passed unanimously by all members and we're applauding this move!
What's the Fare?
As per the new fare structure which will be applicable from the 1st week of July onwards, the tickets will range from ₹5 to ₹20 for regular buses and ₹6 to ₹25 for AC buses. The fare restructuring is a part of the reforms suggested by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in an effort to revive the crowds in the city's iconic red buses!
The buses were a mode of transport for nearly 42 lakh passengers daily around a decade ago and currently, only about 25 lakh passengers use the service now! Mumbaikars are hoping to see proper maintenance of these buses and of course, there is a need in the rise of the frequency too, only then will the purpose of fare reduction come handy.
Although the proposal was passed unanimously, questions about the decline in the revenue by nearly ₹35 lakh stands still, which would translate to around ₹9 crore a month. There are questions being raised about the full-on execution of this plan because there is a shortage of staff and increasing its fleet size under the wet lease model, will require extensive resources.
Yuva Sena leader Aditya Thackeray on his first visit to BEST headquarters also stated that in the future, 500 electric buses will be introduced and connectivity across the city will be in focus!
