On its worst COVID day, Lucknow reported 4,449 new cases, taking the total aggregate count to 1,07,412 cases, raising alarms as the highest tally across Uttar Pradesh. As prevention, the state has imposed fresh restrictions by capping the number of devotees entering a religious place at a time. The decision was announced late on Saturday night, as a proactive measure, to check the COVID rise during the upcoming festive season of Navratri and Ramzan.

On Monday, more than 3890 fresh COVID cases were reported in Lucknow and 13,685 cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh.

Like many other rivers in the country, Gomti, the elixir of Lucknow's life, is also shrouded by the adverse effects of pollution and unchecked human behaviour. In the latest string of developments, a thick sheet of harmful froth was seen layering the surface of the river. With the increased levels of pollutants, the froth is a clear indication of depleting oxygen in the water body and its impending threats to aquatic life.
