After a six-month-long effort, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has completed the restoration of the ‘Shahi Rasoi’ (royal kitchen) at Chhota Imambara. The 19th-century structure had developed several cracks last year due to ageing and neglect, which were promptly identified and taken up for conservation by ASI authorities.
Most of the restoration work inside the kitchen has now been completed. Along with repairing the cracks, fresh plastering has been carried out to stabilise the structure and enhance its longevity.
Notably, ASI ensured the use of traditional methods, materials and techniques throughout the process. Ingredients such as slaked lime, black gram, jaggery, natural gum and brick dust, consistent with the original construction practices, were used during the restoration.
While the majority of the work has been completed, final finishing touches are expected to be concluded within the next one to two weeks.
