Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than when you come out of a metro, tired and sweaty and you have to haggle with stubborn autowallahs. Soon, this may be a woe of the past as there is a new pilot project that is gaining traction. With the help of cops in the city, the authorities have set up regulated prepaid auto services at Nehru Place metro station where you won’t have to negotiate for lower prices with autowalas.

Delhi Metro

What’s the update?

As of now, this project has only made its way to Nehru Place Metro station, as part of a trial run. The authorities will note the response and then after much thought, it could well be implemented on a wider scale.

The main reason behind this move is to reduce fleecing that is done by auto rickshaw owners. Many commuters had reported that they charge their own prices as there is no regulation on what the minimum or maximum price should be. Also, Nehru Place is a high traffic Metro station where there are malls and office complexes. It sees a massive footfall and owing to this, the metro station is a great place to test out this new move.

The main draw here is that these prepaid auto services will be run by the Delhi Traffic Police, which makes them reliable and safe as well. Since these autos are in high traffic areas, the cops can monitor them to get a general sense of their popularity and ease of usage.

When the passengers deboard the metro train, they will be directed to booths within the station itself. From these booths, passengers will receive a slip containing the registration numbers of the autos and will have to pay a fixed price, depending on where they have to go.

Additionally, this pilot project will also serve another purpose- to help the traffic cops get a sense of the traffic in the area and also help streamline it around the metro station itself. This will help curb the chaos around the metro station, which is a major issue as of now.

We are glad to see that the traffic cops are trying to regulate these auto rickshaws, the fares and over all, make travelling in metro a seamless experience.
