After much speculation and planning, the move to make Delhi's buses free for women is finally seeing the light of the day. A move that has been in the works for a while now and has led to a lot of speculation, is finally being implemented. According to the CM of the National Capital, free rides on all city buses can be availed by female travellers starting October 29, 2019. Indeed, the move is one that will benefit women from all walks of life. After two long months, this pipe dream is finally becoming a reality.
This confirmation from the Delhi CM came yesterday, on the 73rd Day of Independence- 15th August, 2019. In his speech where he made the news public, he deemed this move as a 'gift' to all the women of Delhi and dubbed it as a Rakhi gift from the nation to them.
As per the rule, no woman will have to pay bus fares in order to get from one place to another. As for the metros, the work for installing the required infrastructure is underway and should be ready in a few weeks time.
Way back in June, the CM had first announced a plan to have a facility like this one. Under his ideals, the goal of the move was to completely change the way that women in Delhi see public transport. Free rides on Metro as well as city buses, was an ambitious change that everyone was looking forward to. However, it remained a pipe dream as it couldn't be implemented.
In his tweets, the CM mentioned that this takes us a step towards facilitating the women of Delhi to lead better, more convenient and safer lives. In order to make public transport safe for women, the plan is to install CCTV cameras in almost all buses across the national capital.
The availability of free public transport to women- both buses and metros will certainly change how Delhiites, especially women, view and use the public transport facilities. It will surely herald an era of new age working women who will be free to traverse Delhi like never before.
