Sultan Ji Sweets and Snacks is one of Old Delhi’s best kept secrets. This quaint sweet shop is located right by the Jama Masjid in the old city and believe us, it is a treasure trove for people who have a sweet tooth. They serve the most delicious and stunning jalebis we’ve ever seen and you really need to try them. Alert the other dessert lovers around you because these black jalebis are as delicious as they look!
The crowded lanes of Old Delhi are sometimes a bit much to deal with, but when the prize is the delicious-bathed in syrup-gothic looking jalebis, well we are all for it. Be it the sweltering summers or murky winters, these jalebis have the power to pick you up, instantly. They don’t only look good but taste good too!
The jalebis are thick, black and its all very pleasing to the eye, but real test is of taste. When you bite into the syrupy goodness of these jalebis, at first you can feel the crunchiness and then the mother of all surprises! You’ll find that these jalebis are filled with mawa/khoya/thickened condensed milk, whatever you want to call it, and it is creamy.
The textures play so well with each other, you get crunchy, you get creamy, smooth, sticky, it is a pure mouthgasm and we would recommend it a 100%.
Since you already are at the sweet shop, do yourself a favour and get the black rasgullas as well. These, much like the jalebis, are also a fan of goth, explaining their colour. Once we move beyond the initial beauty of the perfectly round, syrup filled rasgullas and finally decide to taste it, the rasgulla pleasantly surprises us with all the softness.
The rasgulla is sooo delicate, it simply disintegrates in your mouth, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘melt in your mouth’ and is again, oh-sooo-delicious. You can also try their dahi-bhallas, but once you eat the sweets, nothing else going to impress you for days!
