320 km from Ahmedabad: Gir and Barda wildlife sanctuaries see record tourist influx in March 2025
The Gir National Park, located approximately 320 km from Ahmedabad, and Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, around 360 km away, have witnessed a significant increase in tourist footfall over the past month, signalling a growing interest in Gujarat’s rich wildlife heritage. According to official data, the number of visitors to Gir has risen by 18.8% in the last 20 days, reaching 59,009 compared to 49,681 in the preceding period.
Tourist numbers double at Barda Wildlife Sanctuary
The trend is also evident at Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Porbandar district, which has seen tourist numbers double, from 105 in February to 215 in March. Barda, historically home to Asiatic lions until 1879, has been gaining attention as an alternative habitat for the species. Conservation efforts in recent years have led to the establishment of a lion population in the region, with 17 lions, including a male, five females, and 11 cubs, now calling Barda their home.
Officials from the Gujarat Forest Department highlight that Barda shares key ecological characteristics with Gir, including similar terrain and habitat conditions, making it an ideal location for lion conservation. The sanctuary has been undergoing ecological restoration, including efforts to reintroduce prey species essential for sustaining the lion population.
Economic boost to the local communities
Beyond its conservation significance, the rise in tourism is providing an economic boost to the local communities surrounding these sanctuaries. Increased visitor numbers have translated into higher earnings for local guides, safari operators, and hospitality businesses, contributing to sustainable development in the region.
With growing public interest in wildlife and eco-tourism, authorities continue to enhance facilities and conservation programs to ensure a balanced approach between tourism and environmental protection.
