At the inauguration of the Ahmedabad International Flower Show 2025, a GIS/GPS-based tree census and mapping project for Ahmedabad was launched. Led by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), this comprehensive survey aims to assess the city’s green cover changes, over the past 12 years.
The project, spearheaded by AMC’s Heritage and Recreational Committee, has appointed a consultant who will be paid ₹7.89 per tree surveyed. The total cost of the census is estimated at ₹8 to 10 crores.
The previous census in 2012 recorded 618,000 trees, constituting 4.66% of Ahmedabad’s 466 sq km area at the time. Over the past 12 years, the city has grown to 480.88 sq km, prompting an updated count to evaluate the progress in green cover.
AMC has reported planting over 1 crore trees since 2012, with 75.43 lakh planted in the last five years. However, a random survey revealed a survival rate of 60%, indicating that 30.17 lakh saplings failed to thrive.
