In a bid to properly dispose off the e-waste in the city, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has issued tenders for agencies to oversee the entire e-waste disposal process. From discarded electrical appliances like microwaves, and CRT TVs to old mobile phones and tube lights, improper disposing of such e-waste can have a detrimental effect on the environment.

E-waste contains precious metals that can be utilized

In this new attempt to enhance e-waste disposal in the city, said agencies will be responsible for the collection, building storage centers for e-waste and the transportation of waste. In recent years, lack of infrastructure for e-waste disposal in Ahmedabad has resulted in e-waste collection by local scrap traders who do not dispose off the waste properly.

Furthermore, e-waste also has precious metals like gold, platinum and silver in small quantities, which can be repurposed for different uses. And according to a 2017 AMC study, a ton of discarded mobile phones alone contains 245g of gold. Now, the AMC will ensure that all e-waste is properly being disposed off, and whatever is usable is salvaged.
