An international convention, cultural, and business centre to come up at Riverfront
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a ₹792.5 crore budget for a world-class convention, cultural, and business centre at the Sabarmati riverfront near Paldi.
The centre will include a 1,500-seat theatre, a 300-room hotel, an exhibition space, and parking for 1,000 vehicles. Additional features include a performing arts venue, an amphitheatre, and a cultural plaza, making the facility a versatile space for business events, cultural shows, and weddings.
Colder weather returns to Gujarat as temperatures drop
After a brief warm spell, Gujarat is set to experience a drop in temperatures, signalling the return of winter chills. Ahmedabad recently recorded a minimum temperature of 20°C.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a further dip, with Ahmedabad’s minimum temperatures expected to reach 17°C on the 6th and 7th of December, and 16°C on the 8th and 9th of December. A decrease of 2–4°C is likely to bring colder conditions across the state.
Kankaria Carnival to feature Guinness World Record attempt by 1000 students
The Kankaria Carnival is set to begin on the 25th of December, with Chief Minister inaugurating the event at the Kankaria lakefront. The week-long celebration, running till the 31st of December, will include cultural performances, entertainment, and unique activities.
A key highlight of the opening day will be an attempt by around 1,000 municipal school and anganwadi students to set a Guinness World Record by unwrapping and eating candies and chocolates simultaneously.
RTO crackdown collects nearly ₹1 crore in fines
The regional transport office (RTO) has conducted a citywide operation over the past two weeks, penalising over 2,600 vehicle owners and collecting nearly ₹1 crore in fines. The drive targeted violations such as pending challans, expired insurance, and invalid pollution under control (PUC) certificates.
Among the notable cases, a commercial four-wheeler driver was fined ₹35,000, while a two-wheeler rider faced a penalty of ₹15,000. On average, each violator paid ₹3,800, with most vehicles having at least two pending challans.
Revised school timings announced by the Municipal Education Board for winter
To safeguard students from the cold weather, the Ahmedabad Municipal Education Board has revised school timings starting Monday. Morning classes will now run from 7:55 AM to 12:30 PM on weekdays and Saturdays.
Afternoon sessions will begin at 12:35 PM and end at 5:10 PM on weekdays, while Saturday sessions will begin at 11:30 PM and conclude by 3:00 PM. The updated schedule aims to ensure a more comfortable environment for students during winter.
