On the polling day of 7th May in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad City Police announced a ‘No Towing Day’ initiative to facilitate hassle-free parking for voters. Vehicles parked near polling booths will not be towed, with traffic police personnel assisting voters to park efficiently to prevent congestion.
Progress Update: Metro extension nears completion from Vastral to Thaltej Gam
Since its inception in 2019, the metro train service in Gujarat has gradually extended from Vastral to Thaltej, with a current halt due to disputes over encroachment along the route. Nonetheless, the pending one-and-a-half-kilometer stretch from Thaltej to Thaltej Gam is nearing completion, with expectations to be operational up to the village by Diwali.
Gujarat introduces morning and evening shifts for Diploma Engineering Colleges
Beginning with the upcoming academic session, seven diploma engineering colleges in Gujarat will offer morning and evening shifts tailored for working professionals. The state’s Education Department has approved 570 seats in core branches across these government colleges located in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Bharuch, Valsad, and Jamnagar.
However, formal clearance from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is pending.
Gender dynamics in Gujarat’s 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
In the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, women constitute 48.46% of the total 4.94 crore voters, amounting to 2.39 crore individuals.
Notably, Gujarat diverged from the national trend observed in the 2019 elections, with male voter turnout (67.09%) surpassing female turnout (60.90%). Among states with ten or more Lok Sabha seats, Gujarat ranked 15th in terms of female voter participation.
Rising concern: Waterborne diseases surge in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is grappling with an alarming surge in waterborne diseases, with 1366 reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting, alongside 18 cases of cholera in April alone. Affected areas include Amraiwadi, Vatwa, Maninagar, Lambha, Vastral, Bhaipura, and Indrapuri wards.
Municipal health authorities have identified 134 water samples as unfit, highlighting the urgency of remedial measures.
