Can you legally drink during Ahmedabad's Coldplay concerts? Here's what you need to know!
After their electrifying performance in Mumbai, Coldplay is all set to mesmerise fans in Ahmedabad on the 25th and 26th of January. The city is abuzz with excitement as thousands of fans, both domestic and international, prepare to attend this monumental concert.
For many visitors, Gujarat’s alcohol prohibition laws might raise a curious question: can you legally purchase and consume a drink while in Ahmedabad? The answer is yes, but only under strictly regulated conditions. Also you can't drink during the concert at the VENUE!
Know how to get a permit
Gujarat operates a complete alcohol ban under the Gujarat Prohibition Act of 1949, rooted in the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. However, the state offers provisions for tourists and NRIs with foreign passports to purchase and consume alcohol legally.
Tourists can apply for a liquor permit online through the Gujarat State Prohibition Department’s e-Permit portal or directly at authorised outlets. Necessary documents include government ID, proof of travel such as a boarding pass, and accommodation details like a hotel stay certificate.
Visitors staying at 3-star or higher-rated hotels can also obtain permits directly through the hotel. These permits come with a weekly alcohol quota: up to 750 ml of hard liquor, 13 cans of beer, or three bottles of wine. For convenience, licensed liquor stores and hotel bars cater to permit holders.
It’s crucial to adhere to these regulations, as violations can lead to heavy penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or legal complications.
