Exemplary Art Deco Architecture: Into Ahmedabad's Sheth Mangaldas Girdhardas Memorial Hall

Soon to be renovated, the city town hall was designed by British architect Claude Batley in 1939.

One of Ahmedabad's oldest public halls and performance theatres, the Sheth Mangaldas Girdhardas Memorial Hall, was designed by British architect Claude Batley in 1939. With the growth of Western Ahmedabad, the necessity for a public auditorium arose, and through public funds, this town hall was erected. Drawing inspiration from the mandapas of Gujarati Hindu temples, the structure quickly became a bustling hub of activity.

However, succumbing to the passage of time, the structure has lain dormant for a year. In a bid to revive its former glory, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to renovate it. As we anticipate the restoration of this iconic town hall, let's delve into its history and transformation.

Historical Background

Constructed in the 1930s as a tribute to the esteemed textile industrialist Mangaldas Girdhardas, the Town Hall has been a cornerstone of cultural and civic life in Ahmedabad. Designed by the visionary British architect Claude Batley, the hall showcases an exquisite blend of Indo-Saracenic and Art Deco styles, reflecting the architectural ethos of its era.

Over the decades, the Town Hall has witnessed numerous transformations, each contributing to its enduring legacy. Renovated in the 1960s by the renowned architect B.V. Doshi for enhanced acoustics, and later revitalized in the late 1990s under Kamal Mangaldas, the grandson of its namesake, the hall has remained a beacon of cultural pride.

Proposed Renovation Plan

However, as time took its toll, the Town Hall closed its doors a year ago, awaiting a new chapter in its storied existence. Now, with a proposed renovation plan at hand, the hall is poised to reclaim its former glory. The restoration efforts will not only reinforce the structural integrity of the building but also modernize its amenities to meet contemporary standards.

The proposed changes include altering the seating arrangement for improved comfort and visibility, upgrading the sound system, and revamping the stage to accommodate diverse performances. Additionally, alterations to the elevation and the incorporation of modern design elements will breathe new life into this architectural gem.
