The southwest monsoon has finally progressed into Gujarat after a hiatus of over 10 days, bringing significant rainfall to various parts of the state, including Ahmedabad, on Monday and Tuesday. However, the first heavy rainfall of the season has highlighted the city’s vulnerability to heavy rains, necessitating urgent preparedness measures.
Waterlogging and cave-ins with the first heavy rain
Several areas in Ahmedabad faced severe waterlogging and infrastructure damage. Notably, a cave-in was reported in Khokhra near Anupam Cinema. High-velocity winds uprooted trees in Makarba, Andhjan Mandal, Ramdevnagar, and Shyamal crossroads, causing substantial traffic disruptions on Tuesday morning.
The adverse weather conditions also affected international travelers. The road leading to Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport was heavily flooded, causing distress for many.
Call for urgent actions
With the city recording an average of 30 mm of rainfall, certain areas, like Memko and Naroda, experienced as much as 87.5 mm, emphasizing the urgent need for improved drainage and flood management systems.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for more heavy rainfall in the coming days, particularly for Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Dang, Tapi, Valsad, and parts of Saurashtra. These predictions indicate that Ahmedabad and its surrounding areas could face more severe weather conditions.
The recent weather events serve as a wake-up call for Ahmedabad. With the monsoon season likely to bring more heavy rains, proactive measures and thorough preparations are imperative to safeguard the city and its residents from further disruption and damage.
