Indian Railways to modernize Ahmedabad station along lines of Modhera Sun Temple

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Indian Railway plans to revamp almost 1,309 railway stations across the country, including Ahmedabad station.

As a heritage city and a prominent business hub of the nation, Ahmedabad attracts a massive influx of tourists and travelers. However, the current railway station has struggled to accommodate such a high volume of traffic, leading to congestion issues.

In a bid to address this challenge and elevate the city's transportation and tourism offerings, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) successfully concluded the pre-bid meeting on Monday for the redevelopment of the Ahmedabad railway station.

What lies in the redevelopment?

The ambitious project aims to convert the existing station into a world-class transportation hub, boasting modern amenities and entertainment options for visitors. Once completed, the new Ahmedabad railway station will feature a spacious roof plaza offering a wide array of passenger facilities.

Retail spaces, cafeterias, and recreational areas will be incorporated, providing convenience and enjoyment to travelers. The station will span both sides of the railway tracks, seamlessly connecting both halves of the city. Furthermore, the revamped station will include a food court, a comfortable waiting lounge, designated play areas for children, and a section dedicated to showcasing local products.

Great emphasis will be placed on ensuring passenger comfort, with proper illumination, clear signage, and easy access facilitated through lifts and escalators. A well-designed master plan will ensure smooth traffic flow and ample parking provisions.

According to RLDA Vice Chairman Ved Parkash Dudeja, "The redevelopment of Ahmedabad station is among our flagship projects, which will integrate different modes of transport such as High Speed, Metro, BRT, Railways, etc., while preserving the city's heritage structures. "

Drawing Inspiration from the Iconic Sun Temple:

Adding a touch of grandeur and cultural significance, the station's design will be inspired by the iconic Sun Temple. A magnificent arch, reminiscent of the Modhera Sun Temple, flanked by two iconic towers on either side, is expected to become a visual delight for visitors.

Bidding Process Update

The RLDA successfully concluded the pre-bid meeting on Monday, hosting both online and offline participants, including prominent construction houses such as L&T, NCC Ltd, GR Infra, Dilip Buildcon, PSP Projects, AFCONS, KEC International, Thoth Infrastructure Ltd, IRCON, and others.

The redevelopment of Ahmedabad station will be undertaken in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) mode, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,563 crore. The deadline for e-bid submission is set for September 5, 2023, until 15:00 hrs, and the opening of e-bids (technical) is scheduled for September 8, 2023, at 15:30 hrs.

With this ambitious project on the horizon, Ahmedabad's railway station is poised to undergo a remarkable transformation, promising to elevate the city's transportation infrastructure and provide a world-class experience for all its visitors and residents.
