Knocksense Shorts | Curbing stray cattle: How Ahmedabad is taking the lead
Ahmedabad's local council has taken a proactive stance to tackle the problem of stray cattle through a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which involves the creation of zone-level teams tasked with addressing the issue across the city.
The Cow Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) is at the forefront of this initiative, ensuring that cattle owners provide suitable accommodations for their animals. To enforce compliance, the CNCD is authorized to report individuals hindering the capture of stray cattle to the police.
A registry of cattle owners and their corresponding shelters, organized by ward, is being established. Licensing will be contingent on the quality of these accommodations and the intended purpose of the cattle. Penalties may be imposed on non-compliant cattle owners if necessary.
The health department is conducting regular inspections of milk sold within the city, enhancing public health and safety. Furthermore, the city administration is negotiating with the state government to acquire pasture lands for the creation of animal hostels.
