Looking for a quick getaway from Ahmedabad that combines history, stunning architecture, and a bit of adventure? Well, a day trip to the Modhera Sun Temple and Rani ki Vav in Patan is just what you need.

These heritage sites, just a few hours away from the city, offer a glimpse into Gujarat’s glorious past and make for a perfect road trip with friends or family.

Stop 1: Modhera Sun Temple, an 11th c. temple

Start your day with a scenic drive to Modhera, a quiet village home to one of India’s most beautiful temples. Built in the 11th century by King Bhima I, the Modhera Sun Temple is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. It’s designed in such a way that during the equinoxes, the first rays of the sun light up the temple’s inner sanctum.

As you walk around, you’ll notice the impressive Surya Kund, a large stepwell in front of the temple. Its walls are covered with intricate carvings of deities and mythological scenes, making it a visual treat. The Sabha Mandap, or assembly hall, is equally mesmerising with its beautifully carved pillars and ceilings. Even though the temple no longer functions as a place of worship, its peaceful atmosphere and stunning architecture are reason enough to visit.

You can also catch the light and show (happens everyday at 7 PM except on Mondays).

Stop 2: Rani ki Vav

After soaking in the beauty of Modhera, head to Patan to explore Rani ki Vav, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stepwell, built by Queen Udayamati in the 11th century, is an architectural wonder. Unlike a regular well, it’s designed as an inverted temple, with seven levels of intricate carvings that take you deeper underground.

Every step you take reveals something new—elaborate sculptures of gods, goddesses, and celestial beings. The carvings of Lord Vishnu in different avatars are particularly impressive. The deeper you go, the cooler it gets, offering a welcome break from the heat. It’s fascinating to see how something as simple as a water reservoir was transformed into a work of art.
