There’s no other neighbourhood quite like Old Ahmedabad during Uttarayan. Everyone, from children to the elderly, gathers on their terraces with a stock of kites and firkis, snacks and undhiyu, loud speakers, and pipudis! "Kai Po Chhe!" becomes the rhythmic mantra of the season.

However, a fascinating trend has emerged in past few years: Terrace Rentals in the Old City areas. A surge in demand from corporates, families, NRIs, and people from other cities looking to book terraces for Uttarayan celebrations has led to terrace rental prices shooting up. This growing demand for prime spots to enjoy the kite festival has given rise to Terrace Tourism in city's historic pols.

We spoke with Mr. Ajay Modi, the owner of a well-known tours and travel company, who also rents out terraces for Uttarayan celebrations. He shared some insights on the booming trend.

Packages often include food, festive essentials and more!

With the kite festival just around the corner, the demand for terrace rentals in the Walled City has surged significantly. Locals, as well as people who have moved away from the Old City areas like Khadia, Raipur and Manekchowk are now renting terraces to enjoy the festival. Tour operators like Mr. Ajay Modi, have embraced this demand by offering all-inclusive packages, which include quintessential Uttarayan treats like khajur nu dudh (date milk), undhiyu, puris, jalebi, khachariyu, chikki, and, of course, kites, firkis, and even kite stands.

Renters simply need to bring their friends and family—everything else is taken care of. "It’s a win-win," says Mr. Modi. "Locals earn a side income while guests enjoy the quintessential Amdavadi Uttarayan experience." Packages can range from ₹3,000 per person to higher, depending on the terrace's location and facilities.

Rupesh Salot, the owner of Diwanji ni Haveli in Sankdi Sheri, Khadia, shared that they’ve already received inquiries from corporates well in advance. "While our heritage haveli terrace can host up to 100 people, we’re limiting it to 50 guests this year. The package price ranges from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh," he explains.
