Threads of empowerment: This Rakshabandhan, buy rakhis made by visually impaired girls of Ahmedabad

Through their creativity and resilience, the girls of Memnagar Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh craft beautiful rakhis for the occasion.

Rakshabandhan is fast approaching, and along with it comes the joy of shopping for those colorful rakhis. However, this Rakshabandhan you can be part of a noble cause as you can contribute to it by purchasing rakhis made by visually impaired women from Memnagar Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh in Ahmedabad.

2,500 rakhis handcrafted daily by visually handicapped women

Despite facing the challenges of visual disability, these inspiring women produce 2,500 rakhis daily, relying solely on their sense of touch and sensation. Their determination and hard work have made them independent earners and creators of beautiful rakhis. It is truly astonishing how these women have bravely transcended their disability, contributing meaningfully to society.

The Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh serves as a lodging and boarding school for approximately 140 girls, providing them education and a nurturing environment.

Smita Shah, the project coordinator at the institution, shares that each girl crafts around 200 to 250 rakhis in a day, and these rakhis are exclusively sold at the institute. This tradition has been ongoing for the past 20 years, with all raw materials for the rakhis being provided by the institute itself.

The process begins in February, and the sale of rakhis starts from June onwards, each year. To further support these remarkable girls, they receive a stipend of a thousand rupees every month. Notably, the girls' talents extend beyond rakhis, as they also create beautiful lamps during Diwali, Chikki for Uttarayan, and office files throughout the year.

The girls are provided with education from KG to primary schooling within the institute's premises. As they progress to higher education and college, the institution continues to fund their studies.

Purchasing rakhis and other items made by them not only adds meaning to our celebrations but also uplifts their spirits and helps them achieve financial independence. So, let us extend our support to their efforts and make this Rakshabandhan truly special!
