Venture into Ahmedabad's history, art, culture & architecture at Sanskar Kendra, a modernist museum!

Soon to become a world heritage museum!

If there's a place that epitomizes the rich history, art, culture, and heritage of Ahmedabad, it's undoubtedly the Sanskar Kendra City Museum. Nestled near the Sardar Bridge in Ahmedabad, India, this museum stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and cultural preservation.

Designed by the visionary architect Le Corbusier in the Modernist style, the Sanskar Kendra was conceived as part of a grand Cultural Centre for Ahmedabad. While the complete complex was never realized, the Sanskar Kendra emerged as a solitary beacon of cultural celebration. Its foundation stone was laid in April 1954, marking the beginning of a journey to encapsulate the essence of Ahmedabad's diverse identity.

Exploring Sanskar Kendra City Museum

The architecture of the Sanskar Kendra is a marvel in itself. Embracing Le Corbusier's iconic principles, the museum stands on pilotis, elevated 3.4 meters above the ground. Its exterior, adorned with plain brick and exposed concrete elements, exudes a raw elegance.

The Sanskar Kendra houses two captivating museums within its walls. The Patang Kite Museum pays homage to Gujarat's vibrant tradition of kite-flying, featuring an array of kites, photographs, and artifacts. Each exhibit narrates a story, capturing the essence of this cherished pastime that comes alive during the festive season of Uttrayana.

Meanwhile, the City Museum offers a comprehensive journey through Ahmedabad's cultural landscape. From religious artifacts to historical photographs, this museum provides insights into the city's multifaceted identity. Visitors can delve into the freedom struggle, with a special focus on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, whose legacy echoes through the streets of Ahmedabad.

One of the most striking features of the Sanskar Kendra is the world's tallest incense stick, standing proudly at 4.5 meters.

Within the museum's walls lie several exceptional artifacts, among them a rare seated marble statue of Queen Victoria, once a prominent feature of the Victoria Garden. Additionally, visitors can behold the foundation stone of the Ellisbridge, which dates back to the 1800s.

Despite its closure in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sanskar Kendra has embarked on a journey of renovation, preparing to welcome visitors once again. As its doors reopen, this cultural oasis promises an enriching experience for all who seek to unravel the mysteries of Ahmedabad's past and present.
