In the last decade, Ahmedabad has seen a significant push toward developing Oxygen Parks and Urban Forests. These green pockets aim to improve air quality and enhance urban biodiversity. So far, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has established 319 such parks across different zones of the city.
But what are Oxygen Parks, and why are they gaining importance? Read on to see how they're reshaping Ahmedabad’s urban landscape!
Unlike traditional gardens that primarily focus on landscaping and ornamental plants, Oxygen Parks are designed with dense plantations of native trees that maximise oxygen production and air purification. These parks use afforestation techniques like the Miyawaki method, which ensures faster tree growth and a more self-sustaining ecosystem. Additionally, they serve as green lungs for urban areas, helping to combat pollution and temperature rise.
Ahmedabad’s rapid urbanisation has led to rising pollution levels, shrinking green spaces, and increasing temperatures, making urban forestry a crucial solution. Oxygen Parks play a key role in tackling these challenges by absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, and providing natural cooling to counteract the urban heat island effect. Additionally, they serve as biodiversity hotspots, supporting local flora and fauna in a rapidly developing city.
Among the recently inaugurated projects is the Bodakdev Oxygen Park on Sindhu Bhavan Road, developed in collaboration with the Montecarlo Foundation. Another notable addition is the South Bopal Oxygen Park.
The impact of these green spaces extends beyond environmental benefits. Studies suggest that proximity to greenery improves mental well-being, reduces stress, and promotes physical activity. Parks provide aesthetic and recreational spaces for residents, encouraging a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, they help in groundwater recharge and temperature regulation, making cities more resilient to climate change.
With Ahmedabad’s increasing focus on sustainability, the expansion of Oxygen Parks marks a crucial step in creating a greener, healthier, and more livable urban environment.
