Soon people in Gujarat will be able to enjoy a unique dining experience inside decommissioned railway coaches, without actually travelling. The Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway is set to introduce ‘Rail Coach Restaurants’ at 5 railway stations: Mahesana, Sabarmati, Ambli Road, Bhuj, and Gandhidham, transforming old train coaches into dining spaces.
According to Annu Tyagi, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, these Rail Coach Restaurants will provide an air-conditioned, multi-cuisine dining experience with both indoor and outdoor seating. The initiative aims to create a family-friendly atmosphere with a fully equipped kitchen, a diverse menu, and even a dedicated play area for children.
“These restaurants are designed to offer passengers a unique dining experience while utilizing station space effectively. By repurposing old coaches, we are not only enhancing passenger amenities but also promoting sustainability, making railway travel more comfortable and eco-friendly,” said Tyagi.
The Rail Coach Restaurants will operate round the clock, catering to both train passengers and local visitors. For travellers on the go, convenient takeaway counters will also be available.
Ahmedabad Division is following the footsteps of Delhi, Mumbai, and Indore, where similar coach restaurants have already gained popularity.
Railway authorities have already invited tenders for the project, with expectations of a significant boost to Indian Railways’ non-fare revenue (NFR). If successful, the Ahmedabad Division is considering expanding this initiative to more railway stations across the region.
