Ahmedabad gets its first-ever ‘Cool Bus Stop’: An eco-friendly effort to combat rising heat levels

Lowering temperatures by 6–7°C and greatly enhancing comfort in the waiting area.

To provide relief from the rising heat, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS) have launched the city’s first ‘Cool Bus Stop’ at Lal Darwaja. Developed in collaboration with Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), this initiative is part of the Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan to mitigate the effects of extreme temperatures.

A combination of ‘khus curtains’ and a high-pressure mist cooling system

The newly-introduced bus stop at platform numbers 7 and 8 has been designed to lower ambient temperatures by 6–7°C, making the waiting area more comfortable for the 3,000 commuters who use it daily. The cooling effect is achieved through a combination of ‘khus curtains’, made from dried vetiver grass, and a high-pressure mist cooling system. These elements work together to naturally reduce heat and enhance air circulation.

This eco-friendly solution consumes significantly less electricity compared to conventional air conditioners, helping to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. The cooling system is equipped with automated smart features, including a timer panel and water- and electricity-saving mechanisms. Additionally, a dust suppression system has been integrated to improve air quality by reducing pollutants in the immediate environment.

Speaking at the event, AMC officials highlighted the importance of such initiatives in ensuring the city’s preparedness for rising temperatures and climate change.
