Birders, plan a getaway from Ahmedabad to experience the surreal Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary!

Khushbu Kirti

A haven for migratory birds, the Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary is known for standing as a natural habitat for more than 160 species of birds. Spread over 7 sq kms, the entire lush milieu encompasses the Thol lake, scrub forests and marshlands.

If you're a nature lover and looking to get away from the chaos and monotony of city life, this is an ideal escape! Although the perfect time to visit the place is the winter months (between November-February) that see migratory birds flocking to the lake, you can also choose the spot in any season for a comforting natural embrace.

All about the Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary

Located at an easy distance of approximately 35 kms from Ahmedabad, this is a 55-minute journey from a well-connected road network to the birders' paradise. The sanctuary is situated near Kadi's Thol village in Mehsana District, Gujarat.

The serene sanctuary is also home to several prominent bird species like flamingos and pelicans and even some endangered species like the Sarus crane, Indian vultures, Skimmers, among other names. This makes the place a personal favourite of birders, nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.

Initially, in 1912, it was artificially built as an irrigation tank to support farmers and manage severe water crisis that the country was facing then. However, today, it is jointly managed by the Forest and Irrigation departments of the Government of Gujarat and is a popular ecotourism spot. Owing to the fact that it acted as an peaceful bird habitat, the Thol Lake was, in 1988, declared a bird sanctuary.

A rejuvenating getaway trip

Perfect for a morning escapade, the Thol lake provides a tranquil getaway space, while the lush greenery with floating aquatic plants in the wetlands infuse life and rejuvenation in the visitor.
