Gujarat Day | From ancient Dwarka to 'Jewel of Western India', Gujarat marks 64 years of statehood

A celebration of legacy, identity, and progress

Each May 1st, Gujarat turns into a living canvas of cultural pride as it celebrates Gujarat Sthapana Divas, commemorating its birth as a state in 1960. This historic day traces its roots to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, which divided the bilingual Bombay State into Maharashtra (for Marathi speakers) and Gujarat (for Gujarati speakers), fulfilling the long-standing demand of the Mahagujarat Movement that began as early as 1937.

Gujarat through the ages

Gujarat's story spans millennia, beginning with the Indus Valley Civilisation and flourishing through the legendary kingdom of Dwarka, where a major deity in Hinduism, Lord Krishna, is said to have ruled. Over centuries, mighty empires, from the Mauryas and Guptas to the Solankis, shaped its cultural and economic identity.

Renowned as the "Jewel of Western India", this coastal powerhouse gave the world Mahatma Gandhi and became synonymous with maritime trade, industry, and entrepreneurship. Its vibrant culture thrives in Navratri's rhythmic Garba, the white deserts of Rann Utsav, and the enduring legacy of Sabarmati Ashram, a global symbol of peace.

On Gujarat Day, the state erupts in celebration. Streets come alive with flag-hoisting ceremonies, folk dances, and dazzling parades showcasing traditional attire. Schools buzz with art competitions and essay contests, while seminars highlight Gujarat’s role in nation-building, from its thriving harbours to its far-reaching global community.

64 years of tradition, progress, and innovation

As Gujarat marks 64 years of statehood, the day serves as a reminder of its journey, from the Mahagujarat Movement led by visionaries like K.M. Munshi to its present-day role as a beacon of development. It’s a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and embrace a future where tradition and innovation walk hand in hand.
