Taking a massive step on the path to sustainability, the Gujarat State Government has received the long-awaited "go ahead" from the Centre to build an off-shore wind power generation plant that is expected to produce up to 2 Gigawatt of wind power once it is up and running in full swing.

In order to build the required on-shore infrastructure along Gujarat's coastline such as transmission networks, which is estimated to cost up to Rs 24,000 crore, the Union Government and the Gujarat State government will partner. For offshore infrastructure, such as offshore windmills, the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy will soon invite bids.

All the power generated by the said project will be purchased by the Gujarat State Government. It must also be noted that Gujarat's 1,600-km-long coastline holds the potential of generating 36 Gigawatt of wind energy, according to the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE). The said project, once completed, will go a long way in making use of that potential while also meeting the state's ever-increasing energy requirements.
