Lotus Public School becomes Ahmedabad’s FIRST civic-run English medium school with a name

Breaking from the tradition of schools being identified by their locations.

In a notable step towards public education, Lotus Public School was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Cooperation, Micro, Small, and Medium Industries, on Monday in Viratnagar, Ahmedabad. This institution is the first English medium school to officially have a name, among the 56 operated by the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board -- breaking from the tradition of schools being identified by their locations.

Rise in demand for English medium public schools

Constructed at a cost of Rs 5.4 crore, the two-storey primary school boasts 25 classrooms and serves 171 students from Balvatika to Class V. This new facility was established in response to residents' demands for an English medium school in the area. Notably, more than 120 of the enrolled students have transitioned from private schools, underscoring the appeal of this public option.

The concept of English medium public schools in Ahmedabad was introduced by the Municipal Corporation School Board during the 2013-14 academic session, initially targeting pre-primary classes in Shahpur. Over the past decade, the popularity of these schools has surged, leading to the establishment of 56 such institutions. The 2023-24 academic year saw the introduction of Balvatika, a pre-primary class for children under six, following the State Education Department's new guidelines.

Parents are increasingly drawn to public schools like Lotus Public School due to their superior infrastructure and the availability of English medium education.
