In a bid to provide seamless connectivity from the heart of city of Mumbai to the new Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, a new 918-metre long four lane bridge was inaugurated for the public earlier this week.

The new cantilever bridge will provide direct access from the Gobhunder Road in Thane to the National Highway.

Providing seamless connectivity for heavy vehicles

Reportedly, the construction of the connecting bridge commenced in the year 2018, after the deterioration of the pre-existing two-lane Gujrat bound bridge.

The wider 4-lane bridge is expected to provide significant traffic relief to the Mumbai-Surat corridor, particularly across the Varsova creek area. In addition, heavy vehicles will also be able to ply through the new bridge, which wasn't possible through the older, two-lane bridge.

Notably, the type of structures which have been utilized in the construction of the bridge are called cantilevers, which are solely anchored at one of its ends, with the other end extending horizontally into space. Bridges that are constructed using such structures are called cantilever bridges. At any rate, the highway will make for smoother commutes.
