Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor is getting a specialised track-switching system designed to allow trains to change tracks safely at high speeds. As the priority section of the corridor moves towards operations, National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is introducing movable crossings, also known as swing-nose crossings. The system is designed for trains operating at speeds of up to 320 kmph.
Conventional railway turnouts have a fixed crossing where the rails meet, leaving a small gap that wheels pass over. At high speeds, this can create additional impact, vibration and wear. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will instead use a movable crossing. The crossing nose shifts along with the switch rails, creating a more continuous running surface for the train. According to NHSRCL, this is expected to reduce impact and vibration while also lowering wear on both the track and train components.
Each high-speed turnout will have two point machines working together. One moves and locks the switch rails, while the other operates and locks the movable crossing. The signalling system checks that both are correctly positioned and securely locked before clearing the route for the train. This dual arrangement is particularly important at speeds of up to 320 kmph, where precise positioning of the track components is critical.
The system has several layers of detection and safety checks. It monitors the position of the switch rails, the movable crossing and their locking. If the required position or locking is not confirmed, the signalling system will not authorise the train to pass through the turnout.
Most passengers are unlikely to see the technology at work. Its effect will instead be in how the train behaves while changing tracks. The movable crossing is designed to provide a smoother path, with reduced vibration and impact. The dual point machines and signalling checks are intended to ensure the track is correctly set and locked before the train passes.
