Uttarayan Safety Hack | Ahmedabad’s two-wheeler riders turn to kite string guards!

Works as a protective barrier against dangerous strings.

As Ahmedabad prepares to celebrate Uttarayan, safety is emerging as a crucial focus this year. Kite string guards, simple yet effective devices, are gaining traction among two-wheeler riders as a preventive measure against injuries caused by stray kite strings.

These guards consist of steel-looped wires that can be mounted on vehicle handlebars or mirrors, creating a protective barrier against strings that might otherwise cause harm. Jyoti Patel, Vadodara’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), highlights their effectiveness, stating, “The guard can prevent almost 90% of serious neck injuries.”

While the use of hazardous Chinese manjha has been banned, injuries during the festival continue, with Gujarat police pointing out that even permitted cotton strings can cause severe injuries or fatalities. This has spurred efforts to promote the use of kite string guards across the state.

Local vendors and volunteers in Ahmedabad are making these guards widely available, with prices ranging from ₹80 to ₹150. Their accessibility and ease of installation have made them a popular choice for ensuring safety during the festivities. For Ahmedabad, where kite flying is a cherished tradition, adopting kite string guards is a proactive step toward celebrating Uttarayan with joy and safety for all.
