The Goa Government in a recent state review cleared the consent terms of the six-lane elevated highway from the Guirim junction to Teen Building (near Gauri petrol pump) in Porvorim. The plan for this 27-m-wide road has been finalised in a way that affected locals will be compensated with a relocated accommodation, with special floor area ratio, as per present market rates. This project is expected to complete at a budget of ₹450 in the coming years.

Need of the hour: Six-lane elevated Highway

Just recently, a Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) delegation under the authority Ralph de Sousa met PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral to highlight the loose ends of the logistics sector, with special focus on the condition of the roads in Goa. GCCI concerns were targetted at the 4.5km stretch from Porvorim to Guirim, which is prone to several and severe bottleneck and traffic jams. This also impedes the flow of heavy cargo buses, they added.

The average distance from Porvorim to Guirim is 9 km which would ideally be a 15-minute drive. However, due to high traffic congestion, commuters are often stuck for hours on the road. To avert this, the government has decided to issue fresh a order to commence construction, once it has build consensus wih local stakeholders.

Previously, Porvorim residents had also approached the Supreme Court over the elevated road issue for speedy action. Once the road is built, it will effectively solve the traffic problems here, streamlining easy vehicular flow with virtually no jams.
