Goa curfew extended till August 16

In a bid to mitigate a revived acceleration of infections, the Goa administration has extended the continuing curfew for a period of one week till 7 AM on August 16. Notably, the curfew was first imposed on May 9 during the second wave of the pandemic and it has been extended multiple times since then. While the government has offered a number of relaxations during the past month, the ongoing curbs will remain to be in place as of now.

Shops and malls are allowed to remain open from 7 AM to 6 PM. Additionally, salon and outdoor sports complexes/ stadiums have been permitted to operate while gyms can also be opened with 50% capacity. Further, reports state that the Goa government has tweaked its travel protocol and travellers from other states will be allowed entry based on one of the two stated conditions. Either the person must be doubly vaccinated or he/she must produce a negative RT-PCR report.

While a number of centres have been reopened, the casinos will remain shut for now. In addition to this, educational institutes shall also remain closed in the state but the scheduled examinations will be conducted. Reportedly, the detailed order by the government is awaited and it is expected that a few more relaxations may be announced.

The state officials aimed for 100% first-dose vaccination of eligible beneficiaries by July 31 but reports mention that around one lakh individuals are still left. In view of this, the authorities have accelerated the vaccination drives and awareness programs are also being conducted simultaneously.

As per records, 69 new infections and 87 recoveries were marked on Sunday in Goa. While a cumulative total of 1,71,883 individuals have been affected by the virus in the coastal state, 3,160 fatalities have been logged to date.
