Indian kitchens are nothing without their basket of onions and it is a staple in almost everyone's regular diets. So when the prices of onions hit a staggering ₹80-90/kg, straight from ₹50-60/kg and even less in some areas, it left the citizens teary eyed. Keeping in sight the surging prices of onions in the state, Goa's Chief Minister on Wednesday stated that the vegetable which is an essential commodity, would be provided at a cheaper cost via the state's public distribution system network.

The CM was quoted saying, "Each ration card holder will be given three kg onion at the cost of ₹32-33 per kg", at the state Secretariat on Wednesday. As per reports, the authorities are in the process of sourcing supplies of onion via National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and the supply via Goa's PDS system would be in effect after a fortnight. Amid a sudden spurt in the prices, onion in the Goan market is currently priced between ₹80 to ₹90 per kg, which has left the commoners in dire straits.

In cities like Delhi and Mumbai, the prices of onions have hit ₹100 for a kilogram and such a surge is a result of massive losses to kharif onion in North Karnataka. The early-kharif onion crop sown in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, were destroyed due to incessant rainfall. Heavy rains also lashed onion crops grown in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
