In an initiative to clean the beaches and sensitize people about pollution, ‘Waste Bar’ in Goa is offering free booze in exchange for the waste you collect on the beach. With the campaign #teramerabeach and #cleanbeach on the run, these pop up bars are cleaning the beaches in Goa bit by bit.

With its beautiful sandy beaches and natural charm, Goa is one of the biggest tourism destinations in India, if not the world. The ultimate party spot for the entire country, Goa welcomes over 7 million tourists each year, out of which almost half a million are foreigners.

The majority of people who come to Goa are here for the wild parties, the booze and the beach. Which is why even though it gets extremely tough to look after the beaches and keep them clean, it is also becomes extremely important. These “bars” are making everything so much more easier by dangling the “free booze” candy in front of people and helping them- help the society.

Run by a private beach management agency ‘Drishti Marine’ and the state tourism agency, ‘Waste bars’ are pop-up bars of sorts where people can exchange segregated waste for a drink. This initiative came to life with the first pop-up bar opening at Zanzibar shack located at the end of Tito’s lane on January 30.

Theses bars run on the idea that if brands give out free drinks in exchange of garbage, then people will feel good about doing something for the society and would get a free drink for it as well. The concept at a whole also makes the customer feel good about the brands and the business that are a part of this campaign.

The idea is simple. Bring in cigarette butts, bottle caps or five used straws and you can get a free can of beer or a delicious cocktail. This will not only help the beaches, but would also make people aware about the kind and amount of waste that is thrown around. All in all the concept is a win-win for people, the beaches and even the businesses.

So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself some gloves a garbage bag and enjoy that free chilled beer.
