In an attempt to provide a safer journey to the passengers during COVID, the Indian Railways is all set to deploy a new UltraViolet-C disinfection practice technology to mitigate the airborne spread of coronavirus in trains. As per reports, this technology-driven disinfection through UV robots will be rolled out in a phased manner starting with the premium trains like Tejas and Rajdhani express first. Notably, technology-driven disinfection through UV robots was first used by the Delhi division of Railways, last year. This technology will now be deployed in other premier trains run by the railways now. Notably, 24 pairs of Rajdhani express trains and 25 other premier super fast trains are being operated by the railway at present. While the train coaches are being sanitised regularly as per the stipulated guidelines at present, this practice will ensure added safety from all types of airborne diseases.

According to the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh, after successful trials in AC buses, trains and parliaments, this technology will be unfurled for mass use soon. The installation of a UV-C air duct disinfection system in classrooms, auditoriums, malls and other public places will ensure a safer environment for indoor activities.

Based on the requirements for the deactivation of the SARS COV-2 virus, this new disinfection technology has been developed by CSIR- Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO). Talking about the technology, the Union Minister stated that with 254nm Ultraviolet light, this system is effective against other airborne infections as well.
