The age old Shastri Bridge in Indore will soon be replaced with a modern, 6-lane bridge, catering to increased traffic. Serving as a key route from the Regal Circle in Indore, to the busy Kothari Market, the bridge is subject to heavy vehicular traffic everyday. In light of growing traffic concerns, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has proposed to construct a new, six-lane bridge in it’s place.

New bridge will be constructed 1.4 meters higher

In a recent joint meeting between Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Indore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, it was concluded that the height of the existing bridge is not in accordance with the new railway guidelines.

The new six-lane bridge will be constructed 1.4 meters above the old bridge. Proposedly, the old bridge will be demolished after the construction of the new bridge, so that the traffic remains unaffected.

The plan for the new bridge will be finalised after conducting an extensive feasibility survey. Upon completion of the survey, the plan will be sent to the railway board for final approval, said reports.

Shastri bridge, standing since 1953

The 448 meter long Shastri Bridge was constructed in 1953, and since then, it has served as an important passage connecting the new Indore in the west to the old Indore in the east. The bridge has undergone major wear and tear over the years, and redevelopment is long overdue.
