Indore airport runway to be extended as expansion plans pick up speed

Aditya Vikram

The recently concluded G20 meetings in Indore and the city's relentless march towards becoming India's next IT hub has seen an increased number of foreigners visiting the city. In view of these developments, Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport is all set to see multiple upgrades including an extension of its runway from 2,754 meters to over 3,500 meters.

Proposal for the expansion sent to headquarters

It must be noted that the length of an airport's runway is taken into account when deciding whether or not it will be able to operate major international flights. The current length of Indore airport's runway, while sufficient to operate ATR or Airbus 320 aircrafts, falls short when it comes to facilitating a safe arrival and departure of larger int'l aircrafts.

With these requirements in mind, a proposal to extend the runway and an overall expansion of the airport has already been sent to the headquarters. Furthermore, the airport management has already been allotted a land of nearly 20 acres on which the entire expansion will take place.

Indore might soon see a new airport

Talks are also underway to build a new airport in Indore but the authorities haven't yet reached the advanced stage as the land for the new construction is yet to be finalized. Meanwhile, Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is undergoing continuous expansion as India's cleanest city gears up to welcome visitors flying in from across the globe.
