As far as food items are concerned, Indore is the place of birth for many of India's most famous sweets and savoury items. We have the well known Khatta Samosa, Namkeens that are world famous, a specialty by the name Bhutte Ki Kees, the list actually goes on for a while. The one dish that rules the street food in Indore, is the quintessential Indori Poha.

A well known breakfast meal, Indori Poha is on its way to getting a Geographical Identity (GI) tag that will confirm that this great city is indeed the birthplace of Poha as we know it today.

For a long time now, it has been a subject of debate as to exactly where the most common Indian Breakfast- Poha actually originated from. However, once the GI tag is with Indore, it will settle the scores once and for all. At any rate, the dish tastes so good that once you're eating, you don't really care about where it was first made.

The fact that authorities are working hard towards getting a GI means that they care about the history of not just the dish, but of the city as well and what makes it such a place. In addition to just Indori Poha, the plan is to get GIs for three other places that have originated in the Malwa region of the country.

These dishes include Doodh Shikanji, Khatta Meetha Namkeen and Laung Sev. Indore is well known for these dishes and surely, if you're in the city, you have to take some back for your friends and family.

To fully understand the extent of this great news, it is vital to know exactly what a Geographical Identity tag is. Basically, the tag is used to identify agricultural or man made products that originate from a specific geographical location.

Apart from that, the GI tag also increases the appeal and draw of the place, which eventually ends up attracting a lot of attention. We're glad that the city's food items are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
