Choithram Hospital and Research Centre in Indore conducted a rare operation on August 28, making itself the sixth centre in the world to perform this surgery. With the help of this process, Prakhar Kaushal, a 26 year old IT professional diagnosed with a rare congenital disorder donated a part of his liver to his father, Pradeep Kaushal. Notably, Choithram Hospital is the first hospital in central India to witness such a surgery, performed on an individual suffering from ‘Situs Inversus Totalis’.
Donor with a reverse anatomical arrangement

While Prakhar was discharged from the ICU after being monitored for 5 days post the procedure, his 59-year old father is expected to be released from the hospital, today. Both the donor and the recipient are fine now, informed the officials from the hospital.
The donor suffers from a congenial disorder, wherein the arrangement of organs is a mirror image of the normal anatomy. While he knew his heart was placed the opposite side, it was only recently that he discovered that all of his internal organs were placed differently. After having no luck in finding donors for his father, who was suffering from liver cirrhosis, the techie decided to be the donor himself.
Speaking about this Prakhar’s mother said, “When the disease started increasing, we decided to donate my son’s liver to his father. Prakhar is currently doing work from home so we thought we could. He was also ready, and finally, it was transplanted,”
Surgery completed in a long period of 12 hours

The transplant, performed by Dr. Sudesh Sharda and Dr. Ajay K Jain was completed in around 12 hours, which is twice the time required for a normal transplant. According to Dr. Sharda, the Head of Operations at the institute, the donor’s abnormality became the biggest problem for this process. It was due to this, that the surgery went on for a long period of time.
Previously, India has recorded three such complex operations before this one. Two of these rare surgeries have also been conducted in Japan earlier.
