Indore to become a ‘Signal-Free City’, with AI-powered traffic, boosting efficiency and safety

The move aims to improve the overall traffic movement in the city.

The Madhya Pradesh Government has announced plans to make Indore a 'signal-free city' by reducing reliance on manual control and integrating AI-powered traffic management. The full-scale usage of Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is expected to enhance road safety, reduce congestion and improve overall traffic efficiency.

Although official statements emphasizes making the city signal-free, the move primarily focuses on automating traffic management rather than eliminating signals entirely. The system will rely on AI-driven traffic control, smart surveillance, and adaptive signal mechanisms, ensuring smooth vehicular movement without traditional stop-and-go signals at every intersection. Further, it is expected to reduce road accidents as well along with congrestion-free streets.

MP govt to roll out additional buses for enhancing public transport

To facilitate this transition, the city will witness the construction of flyovers, bypass lanes, underpasses and other infrastructure improvements. Recently, Indore's BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) was dismantled to streamline the traffic movement in the areas. The next move of AI integration is expected to address the challenges of rapidly increasing urban traffic and improve mobility across the city.

Along with this, the Madhya Pradesh Government is also focusing on expanding the state transport bus fleet to enhance commuting options and encourage greater reliance on public transport. Currently, 1,330 buses operate on urban routes across the state.

To further improve sustainability and reduce carbon emissions, the government has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the procurement of 552 e-buses. This initiative aims to lower the carbon footprint, curb pollution, and promote eco-friendly mobility solutions.
