Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is set to become the country’s first zero-waste airport. On December 22, the Minister of Civil Aviation of India will inaugurate the state-of-the-art recycling plant at the airport. The innovative facility, built across 3,000 square feet, embodies the four R’s principle – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Restore.
The airport will now generate revenue through recycling, turning waste into compost and separating dry waste as well.
Setting new eco-standards in Indian aviation
The project represents a significant shift from the airport’s previous waste management approach, where it had to pay Indore Municipal Corporation for waste disposal. Now, the airport expects to generate revenue through its sustainable waste management practices.
The facility will process both wet and dry waste from airlines, shops, and gardens, converting organic waste into compost. Supported by IndiGo Airlines’ Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) fund and with contributions from Airport Authority of India, Aas organisation, and Indore Municipal Corporation, this project assures both environmental and economic benefits.
The airport, which operates over 80 flights daily to 22 destinations including international routes to Dubai and Sharjah, is setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in Indian aviation.
