Tiger numbers soar: Madhya Pradesh tops the chart with 785 tigers

Madhya Pradesh has once again proven why it rightfully holds the title of the 'Tiger State' in India. According to a recent census released on International Tiger Day by the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand, the state's tiger population has seen an incredible surge, by up to 49%, the highest increase among all states in the country.

Despite facing the maximum number of tiger deaths between 2012 and 2022, Madhya Pradesh has managed to account for a whopping 785 tigers in its territory.

Madhya Pradesh's conservation triumph

The census report reveals that Madhya Pradesh is doing an exceptional job in tiger conservation. Out of the total 785 tigers, 563 were found within six tiger reserves, while an additional 222 were spotted outside protected areas. This demonstrates the state's dedication to preserving the habitats of these majestic creatures.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, with a staggering count of 165 tigers, has emerged as the leader among tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh, securing the fourth position in India, following Jim Corbet, Bandipur, and Nagarhole.

The increase in the tiger population brings a new responsibility for the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Tiger Range States. They must focus on stopping poaching and addressing human-wildlife conflicts. Further, establishing a wildlife crime control bureau at the state level is crucial in achieving these goals.
