In a mission to enhance security of passengers, Indian Railways is working towards installing hi-tech Video Surveillance System (VSS) at more than seven hundred prominent railway stations with the sources allocated under the Nirbhaya Fund.

RailTel Corporation, a government company, has been selected to implement the scheme on ground by January, 2023. Nine railway stations of Ratlam division under western railways including Indore, Dr Ambedkar Nagar, and Dewas are set to be covered in the first phase.

All these CCTV cameras networked on optical fibre cable, will cover waiting halls, reservation counters, parking lots, main entrance and exit, train platforms, foot over bridges and booking offices.

Internet Protocol (IP)

Internet Protocol (IP) based Video Surveillance System comes with a set of CCTV cameras operated from a control center. Real-time video feed will be displayed at not only local RPF posts but also at centralised CCTV control room at divisional and zonal levels.

4 types of IP cameras (Dome, bullet, Pan Tilt Zoom and Ultra HD- 4K) are being installed to ensure maximum coverage of the railway premises as these cameras are designed to preserve the video footage for 30 days.

Cameras will be installed in the entire premises. The work at nine railway stations has already commenced. Wiring of the system and installation of cameras would not take much time; accordingly the system shall be viable within a few months, said authorities.
