Kanpur's long-delayed New Kanpur City project is set to launch on August 15, 2025, nearly three decades after it was first proposed in 1996. The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) approved the revised layout in its 143rd board meeting, expanding the scheme from 1,314 to 1,793 plots due to the rising demand.

Key features of the project:

  • Mixed-Use Development – Residential plots, group housing, schools, nursing homes, shopping malls, hotels, and a convention centre.

  • Infrastructure Boost – A 45-meter central road (modelled after Delhi’s Connaught Place), sewage treatment plants, and green spaces.

  • Land Acquisition – 153.31 hectares across five villages, with 57.61 hectares already acquired. Compensation of ₹300 crore has been disbursed so far.

  • Funding – ₹183.5 crore allocated for development, with additional support from the state and central governments.

Moreover, a riverfront on the lines of Patna and a ₹50,000 crore city-wide infrastructure plan, including ring roads and knowledge hubs, are also in the pipeline.

Reviving a long-stalled dream

After being tangled in legal battles and land disputes for 29 years, a turning point came in 2020, when a strong media campaign pushed the KDA into action, clearing illegal structures and reviving the long-stalled plan. Now, the project is gaining real momentum.

Designed with affordability in mind, New Kanpur City will offer plots ranging from 90 sqm to 450 sqm, priced at around ₹30,000 per sqm. With a focus on middle and lower-middle-income families, the township aims to make urban living more inclusive while reshaping Kanpur’s real estate future.
