Amid the challenges of growing urbanisation, solid waste disposal has become a pressing issue for cities including Kanpur. In response, a team of five scientists from IIT Kanpur is developing a comprehensive roadmap to enhance the city's waste management system. With many cities in Uttar Pradesh facing similar challenges, the state government sought assistance from IIT Kanpur to devise a strategic plan.

Reportedly, a team of professors from the Civil Engineering, Environmental, Chemical, and Biosciences & Bioengineering departments at the Kotak School of Sustainability recently met with the District Magistrate and Municipal Commissioner of Kanpur to discuss the project. Collaborative methods were explored during the meeting, and a draft plan was outlined.

The scientists will now work on analysing the city's pre-existing waste management framework. Following this, a coordination committee, comprising representatives from the KMC and IIT Kanpur will be established to oversee the project's execution.

This pilot project in Kanpur will serve as a model, and if successful, the framework will be implemented across the entire state.
