IIT Kanpur to receive ₹10 cr govt funding for establishing MedTech School, Super Specialty Hospital

The first IIT to host a medical school on its premises, the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) will soon be ready to offer a blend of medical research and technological innovation. By 2025, it envisions to establish a fully functional 500-bed Super Speciality Hospital and the School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT).

For the same, a sum of ₹10 crore has been announced in this year's state budget to cater to this development. Aimed at training and producing an advanced generation of medical professionals, the futuristic school's development is picking up speed.

All about The Gangwal School

Previously, foundation stone for the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology (GSMST) and Yadupati Singhania Super Speciality Hospital was laid in July, 2022. Under the upcoming institute, IIT Kanpur has been engaging in numerous R&D initiatives, taking up research opportunities, hosting international workshops and developing various technologies in the previous two years.

"With its strong track record and infrastructure in MedTech Innovation, IIT Kanpur has established a one-of-its-kind Medical School to bring in a paradigm shift in approach towards health care delivery, medical research, and MedTech innovation in the country," IIT Kanpur had announced.

The Gangwal School will be divided into three components: a 500+ bedded Yadupati Singhania Super-speciality hospital with 50 beds+ Cancer Care and Research Center, R&D Centers of Excellence (CoE), under a strong faculty, for MedTech innovation, and provision of super-speciality postgraduate medical programmes like DM and MCh programmes along with trans disciplinary research programmes (MS and PhD) in engineering, science, and medicine interface domains.
